The Rad stuff From NECA, SH Figurarts , Playmates Toys and more
The big show has come and gone once again and it did not disappoint. Well, it sure stings to not have some of those incredible exclusives on my desk.
Let’s get into it.
NECA did not disappoint. We already knew about the TMNT arcade box sets that were exclusive to the event (boo) but they had a LOT more up their sleeve for the show, things we can actually buy too!
1/4 scale movie turtles
First and foremost are the 1/4 scale movie TMNT toys. Wow. These things look so authentic to the movie it is scary plus they actually somehow have something like 30 point of articulation? Madness. Donatello is up for preorder right now at $100 and the rest of the turtles will follow. These are must haves for any TMNT movie fan.
Life size Leonardo
We got some pretty huge Nick TMNT figures (Leo and Mikey) a while back available at retail but now NECA is giving us an original cartoon version of Leonardo at an enormous 5 feet tall! Made from latex and foam Leonardo comes with his two swords and a lot of attitude. Cost? Somewhere in the ballpark of $900.
That’s right, the Shredder! We knew the 4 turtles were being released late 2016 but now we have something to look forward to in 2017, Shredder.
Yes this is the cartoon version fans have been pining for. So much articulation paired with such a great sculpt what isn’t to love? This is probably in a tie with the NECA movie turtles for best in show, but for me finally getting a good Shredder puts this at #1. After all of the extreme disappointments from the likes of Playmates Toys classic collection Shredder and the original comic version from NECA years back this makes up for it.
Playmates Toys, Good Smile, and Mondo
The best of the rest
Pretty weak showing rounding out the TMNT reveals. Good Smile has some great looking statues of Shredder and Bebop hitting if you like their stylized versions.
Playmates Toys absolutely disappoints this year with pretty much nothing getting revealed, teased, or announced. WTF Playmates? They did drop an exclusive movie Bebop with motorcycle but like most all of their prior exclusives it is just a repaint with extra chrome, weak. For being the banner TMNT toy maker I was expecting…something.
Hey Playmates if you aren’t going to utilize the 5-6″ toy rights for TMNT why not let someone like NECA capitalize and make actual good figures?
Lastly we have the Mondo comic turtles, but those are old news. The $150 price point per figure has made these a buy for only the absolute comic die-hards, something that I am not. Granted they look fantastic but at $600 for the set of 4? Nah.
There ya have it, SDCC 2016 and all the turtle power that goes with it. A lot of good stuff coming our way in the next year not only from what was detailed at SDCC but from a lot of other toy makers. Brace those wallets!
